Hurricane Season

Hurricane season has dampered the excitment of “dive season” here in South Florida. With all this entertainment in the ocean, and this horribly ugly website (it’s under construction) we haven’t posted much recently. We have gotten a few dives in with buddies from Cincinnati. Drew and Wendy came to Longboat Key and we dove the Sugar Barge. I think we ended up with about 2 ft. viz. Amy and Jim came down to Key West and we took a much needed vaction, dove one day on a wreck with about 5 ft. viz. All in all, it has been beautiful diving weather with sucky diving viz.

FreeDiving Fins

I’ve been wanting to get some decent freediving fins, like from Sporasub. Here is a nice FAQ to help you pick out the right ones.

CO2 Retention Article

I sometimes get headaches after a dive. I just recently realized that this was due to CO2 buildup. I’m not sure if I’m a retainer, as per the linked article, or if it’s due to shallow breathing to maintain buoyancy. I’m thinking the latter as I don’t always get the headaches. As a divemaster, I tend to herd the flock so I swim around quite a bit, Border Collie style. I focus on deep breathing when I’m doing this and haven’t experienced a headache in those circumstances. Fish ID

Last Tuesday we had the wonderful and rare oportunity to meet Mr. Paul Humann, photographer of the famous Reef Fish, Reef Creature and Reef Coral books. Although the class was late (and you all know how I am after the sun goes down!) I was glued to the presentation. What an honor to meet someone who knows so much about the water’s creatures where I dive every weekend! I think I learned about 40 fish that night. If you get the chance to attend one of his courses, it’s definately worth it!
